Persimmons ripen once a year. Every bar in this run comes from the same pressing, fermented for months before it was poured. We make what the harvest allows, then we wait for the next one.
- Breaks down nonenal, the skin oil behind the smell
- Real fermented kakishibu, made the traditional Japanese way
- Get close to the people you love without second-guessing yourself
- Full 100 g bar, 4 to 6 weeks of daily showers
Every bar is poured by hand from one pressing that fermented for months. That is why batches are small, and why the next one waits for the autumn harvest.
The oil is called nonenal. It forms when skin oils oxidize, and it smells faintly greasy, like a kitchen the morning after frying. It shows up after 40, when the skin's natural antioxidants drop off. The hard part: your own nose tunes it out within minutes. Other people's noses never do.
Quick check: rub a finger behind your ear, then smell it. If you showered this morning and it still isn't clean, that is the oil.
Real fermented kakishibu. Cheap bars use persimmon scent or a splash of juice. Zelvea uses the concentrated tannin extract, listed as Diospyros Kaki Fruit Extract on the label, that actually binds nonenal.
The traditional method. Unripe fruit is pressed and left to ferment for months before a single bar is poured. Most brands only borrow the word Japanese.
One harvest a year. Persimmons ripen once, in the fall. One harvest makes one limited run of bars. When it is gone, we wait.
Per shower, it is small money. A bar lasts 4 to 6 weeks. That works out to less than a cup of coffee a week, for a problem you actually want gone.
4 to 6 weeks with a shower a day. Each bar is a full 100 g, not a travel size. Store it on a dish that drains, out of standing water, and it goes further. Most people use it only on the areas that matter (behind the ears, back of the neck, chest, underarms), which stretches it further still.
Yes, and it is longer than most. You have 90 days. Use the bar, actually use it, and if the smell isn't clearly gone, send us one email. Full refund, no form, nothing to ship back. The started bar stays with you.
It isn't your hygiene. It's an oil called nonenal.
Somewhere after 40, skin starts producing a compound it never made before: 2-nonenal. It is the byproduct of skin oils breaking down, and it is the smell people mean when they say old people smell.
Picture a greasy skillet. Run water over it and the water beads up and rolls off. The grease stays. Regular soap does the same thing with nonenal: it rinses the day off and leaves the oil sitting on your skin, in your collars, on your pillowcase. That is why a second shower changes nothing.
You can't smell it on yourself. Your nose adapts inside of a few minutes. Everyone else's nose does not.
Fermented persimmon tannin, kakishibu, is what cuts through that oil. It binds nonenal and carries it off with the rinse. Most people notice the difference within the first few washes. Their family notices within the week.
The 10-second window test
Hold the bar up to a window in daylight.
Real fermented kakishibu is translucent. Light passes through it with an amber glow.
A fake stops the light. An opaque orange bar is dye and fragrance, not persimmon. Check the label too: real tannin is listed as Diospyros Kaki Fruit Extract.
Why almost nobody makes it this way.

One harvest, once a year.
Persimmons ripen in the fall, and only then. We press one harvest of unripe fruit, the way it has been done in Japan for centuries, and that pressing is the whole year's supply. When the run sells out, there is no second run until the next autumn. That is what real fruit costs.
Months of fermentation, not minutes.
The pressed juice sits and ferments for months. That is what turns it into kakishibu, the tannin that binds nonenal. Only then is it blended into a glycerin base that holds water in the skin. The odor goes. The moisture stays.
Most persimmon soap isn't persimmon soap.
When persimmon soap took off, the copies came fast. Neon orange bars. Persimmon fragrance. Two for the price of a sandwich. Flip the box: if the ingredients don't list Diospyros Kaki Fruit Extract, there is no kakishibu in it, only the color. Kakishibu can't be rushed, so we didn't rush it.

4 ingredients. Each one has a job.
Persimmon tannin is strong. It pulls the oil off the skin, but on its own it leaves skin dry and tight, which is why cheap persimmon bars make you itch. So the bar is built in 2 parts: one ingredient to end the smell, 3 to keep your skin soft.

Fermented Kakishibu
Diospyros Kaki Fruit Extract. Binds nonenal and carries it down the drain.

Shea Butter
Softens and settles mature skin that reacts to everything.

Olive Fruit Oil
Deep, lasting hydration without a greasy finish.

Glycerin
Pulls water into the skin and keeps it there after the rinse.
Try it on your own skin. Pay only if it works.
Use Zelvea for 90 days. If you don't smell the difference, and the people close to you don't either, send us one email. We refund every cent. No form to fill out, no bar to ship back, no awkward questions.
Everything else you want to know.
What does it smell like?+
Very little. A clean, slightly earthy note from the fermented fruit that rinses away completely. Your skin ends up smelling like nothing, so your perfume or cologne gets the whole stage back. If you were expecting a candy-orange scent, that is the fake bar, not this one.
How long does one bar last?+
About 4 to 6 weeks of daily showers. Each bar is a full 100 g. Keep it on a dish that drains and use it on the areas that matter and it lasts longer. Most customers pick a multi-bar pack so the shower never runs dry mid-month.
Is it for men too?+
Yes, and men are often the reason it gets ordered. Nonenal doesn't care who you are: men over 40 produce it just as much, and it settles into collars and pillowcases. A lot of our bars are quietly swapped into a husband's shower. He won't ask. It's soap.
My skin is sensitive. Is it safe for me?+
The base is glycerin, shea butter and olive oil, with no parabens and no synthetic dyes, and it is made for daily use on face and body. If your skin reacts to everything, try it on your forearm for a day or two first.
Where should I use it?+
Once a day in the shower, on the spots where nonenal builds up: behind the ears, the back of the neck, chest, underarms, upper back and shoulders. If you change one thing about how you wash, wash behind the ears and the back of the neck.
How do I know it's real kakishibu?+
Two checks. Hold the bar up to a window: real fermented kakishibu lets light through with an amber glow, a fake bar stays opaque. Then read the ingredients: real persimmon tannin is listed as Diospyros Kaki Fruit Extract. If that name isn't there, the orange is dye.
What if it doesn't work for me?+
Then you don't pay. You have 90 days. If the smell isn't clearly gone, email us and we refund the full amount. Nothing to ship back, no questions.
When will I get it?+
Your order ships as soon as it is packed and you get a tracking number by email the day it leaves. Shipping inside the US is free on every pack. This is a one-time purchase: nothing renews, nothing to cancel.
